Small goals make players precise. With less space to aim at, every shot and pass has to be placed rather than hoped for. That is why small-sided and futsal goals are so useful for target practice, whether you are coaching a youth team, playing on a driveway or setting up a court for adults. This guide looks at futsal goal sizes, how to pick small-sided goals for training, and drills that turn a compact goal into a finishing tool.
Futsal goal size and small-sided options
Under the official futsal laws, the goal is 3 m wide and 2 m high (about 9 ft 10 in by 6 ft 7 in). Futsal is played with a smaller, low-bounce ball, which suits the hard indoor surfaces the game is usually played on.
"Small-sided goals" is a broader term. It covers any goal smaller than a full-size 7.32 m x 2.44 m goal, used for formats like 3v3, 4v4, 5v5 or 7v7. The sizes used for youth small-sided matches vary by country, association and age group, so check your league's rules if you need an exact match. For training and backyard use, there is more freedom to choose what works.

Why small goals help target practice
- Accuracy is built in. A smaller goal punishes sloppy placement and rewards technique.
- More touches and shots. Small-sided games tend to involve players more often than large matches.
- Quick decisions. Tight spaces push players to shoot early and pick spots quickly.
- Space-friendly. Small goals fit courts, driveways and gardens where a big frame would not.
Choosing small-sided or futsal goals
Frame type
- Steel or aluminium frames feel solid and suit regular use on courts and pitches. They are heavier to move.
- Folding frames pack down for storage and transport.
- Pop-up goals are very light and quick, ideal for young children and quick drills, but less stable when struck hard. See pop-up vs frame practice nets for the trade-offs.
Indoor vs outdoor use
Futsal goals often go on hard floors, where pegs cannot be used. Look for goals with weighted bases or a way to add weights, and feet that will not mark the surface. Outdoors on grass, pegs and anchors are usually easier. Our article on indoor vs outdoor practice nets covers what changes between the two.
Net and mesh
Check that the net fits the frame's size and depth and that the mesh is small enough for the ball you use. Futsal and smaller youth balls are smaller than an adult size 5 ball, so mesh size matters. See our mesh size guide.
When comparing listings, check the stated dimensions, frame material, weight, included anchors or weights, and recent buyer reviews. Look at the seller's return policy too.
Setting up small goals for target practice
- Anchor or weight every goal. Even small goals can tip or slide. On hard courts, use weights; on grass, use pegs or anchors.
- Add targets. Corner pockets or a target sheet sized for your goal can make small goals even more demanding. Our comparison of target sheets vs corner targets helps you choose.
- Mark shooting zones. Use flat markers at different distances and angles.
- Plan ball collection. A ball stop net behind the goals saves time in small spaces.
Drills for small-sided and futsal goals
1. Sole-roll finish
Common in futsal: roll the ball across the body with the sole of the foot, then finish into a corner with the inside of the foot or toe-poke. It teaches quick, compact finishing.
2. Toe-poke finishing
Futsal players often use the toe to shoot quickly in tight spaces. Practise short, sharp toe-pokes into the bottom corners from close range.
3. Pass-through gates
Place two cones in front of the goal as a "gate". The ball must pass through the gate before entering the goal. This forces accurate, low shots.
4. Two-goal shooting
Place two small goals side by side with a gap between, or at different angles. A coach or partner calls a goal just before the shot. This adds a decision.
5. 1v1 to small goals
An attacker tries to beat a defender and score into a small goal. Small targets make defenders' jobs easier, so attackers must create good angles before shooting.
6. 3v3 or 4v4 without goalkeepers
Play small-sided games to small goals with no keepers. Optionally, only allow goals from inside or outside a marked zone to change the challenge.
7. Rebounder combination
Set a rebounder at an angle to the goal. Pass into it and finish the return first time.
Sample session for a small group
| Block | Time | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Warm-up | 10 min | Ball mastery, sole rolls, passing |
| Technical finishing | 10 min | Sole-roll finish, toe-pokes, gates |
| Decision finishing | 10 min | Two-goal shooting, 1v1 |
| Game | 15 min | 3v3 or 4v4 to small goals |
| Cool-down | 5 min | Easy touches, stretch |
Adapt timings for age and fitness, and keep groups small so everyone gets plenty of shots.
Safety reminders
- Anchor goals before every session and never let players hang on crossbars.
- On hard courts, check that the surface is dry and free of debris.
- Keep spectators and spare balls away from shooting areas.

Frequently asked questions
What size is a futsal goal?
Under the official futsal laws, the goal is 3 m wide and 2 m high. Small-sided goals for youth football vary, so check your association's rules for match sizes.
Can I use futsal goals outdoors on grass?
Often yes, but make sure they can be anchored properly on grass and that the frame and net are suitable for outdoor conditions. Check the listing and store the goals out of the weather when not in use.
Are small goals good for young children?
Yes. Small goals keep games close and give lots of chances to score with accurate passes rather than power. Light pop-up goals work well for very young players, as long as they are pegged down.
Do I need a futsal ball for futsal goals?
Not for casual target practice, but a futsal ball's lower bounce suits hard surfaces and small goals. For matches, use the ball specified by your league.
